MIAMI (WSVN) -- A motorcyclist who was taken to the hospital after being struck by a driver who, witnesses said, fled from the scene, has a group of Good Samaritans to thank for ensuring authorities located and arrested the motorist.
Officials said the motorcyclist was hit by a black Mercedes-Benz on Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 17th Street in Downtown Miami, just before 6 a.m. Saturday.
"It's nerve-racking," said witness Christian Baquero. "You could tell the gentleman just came out of work."
Good Samaritan Andres Angel said the car was speeding down Biscayne Boulevard. "This black Mercedes, it was coming, like, 100 miles per hour down this road," he said.
Edgar Ruiz said the force of the collision threw the motorcyclist up into the air. "Boom! I turn around, I see the guy flying off ... hits the car, the same car that hit him, and the guy stopped, he looked at [the motorcyclist] and took off," he said.
"All we heard was, 'Stop, stop!' and the guy did not stop, did not stop at all," said Baquero. "He just kept on going."
Angel said he followed the damaged car to a nearby high-rise on the 2000 block of North Bayshore Drive. "When he parked the car in the apartment complex, that's when I told the valet parking [employees] and everyone to call the police," he said. "And he just got out of the car and started running throughout the building."
Miami Police arrested the driver shortly thereafter. An officer later thanked Angel for his help in making sure authorities took the motorist into custody
Miami Fire Rescue transported the motorcyclist to Jackson Memorial Hospital in serious but stable condition.
Angel said he chose to follow the hit-and-run driver because what happened to the motorcyclist could have just as easily happened to him. "Well, at least you do something, I mean, it could have been us because we were right next to that motorcycle."
Baquero said the driver's arrest was the result of a team effort. "I'm really, really happy that he's alive, thank God first and foremost, obviously," he said, "but yeah, this is a group effort, complete strangers gathering, coming together to help someone, a complete stranger, and I'm more than happy to do it."
It is unknown at this time what charges the driver will face.
South Florida driver was arrested Saturday after, police said, he struck a motorcyclist and took off from the scene.
